Latest Sightings
Another day, another storm! But the wonderful wildlife at Martin Mere isn't phased! This week we've had our Marsh Harriers, Kestrels, and Sparrowhawk battling with the wind to search for some food - they're not letting anything stop them. There continues to be a lovely flock of Brambling at Janet-Kear, and have been known to visit the Tree Sparrow feeders and those at Kingfisher Hide. Long-tailed Tits seem to have taken a liking to the Janet-Kear feeders too. Our Kingfisher has been spotted once in the grounds near the canoe safari, but otherwise continues to be as elusive as ever, and the Tawny Owls have been seen occasionally near the nesting boxes at the canoe safari and down by Kingfisher Hide. There is a cute little stoat that seems to love hopping and bounding around in front of Ron-Barker, clearly putting on quite a show, and further down from there in the sluice, a Great White Egret and a Little Egret have been seen sitting cooly. Also in the sluice have been Little Grebe, diving under whenever there is a disturbance. While our Oystercatcher number has dropped slightly, to 70, our Avocet count has risen to 28, which is great to see! Finally, Gill Griffiths has taken a beautiful photo of some Black-tailed Godwits from outside Discovery Hide and it features as our sightings photo this week!
