Today we moved our breeding herd of English Longhorn Cattle off the mere, they have done a great job and eaten all of the rank grasses and created lots of scrapes as they scratch in the sand to create dust bathes, these will provide micro habitats for various species that love disturbed ground. The cows are now in front of the Ron Barker hide. Now the cows are off the mere we can drop the water levels down without risking the cows ending up in harrier hide. Lowering the water levels will expose lots of mud for passive waders, we will expect to see curlew, black-tailed godwits, common, green and wood sandpipers.theu use their long bills to prod in the mud and eat invertebrates and the occasional fish.
Still lots of Swifts over the mere and reedbed feeding on insects.
Fledged kestrels next to the Ron Barker hide.
The kingfisher is showing well at the Ron Barker hide
